Non-Collage

When assembling a collage I find each cut element can assimilate a value based on properties such as form, colour, pictorial theme, the relationship with other fragments... I found this subjective and idiosyncratic process worth exploring. Postponing the activity of collaging, I began to photograph each paper collage element in isolation in order to capture this ‘value’. Using 35mm colour film I meticulously recorded 100 fragments I considered worthy of collaging (before archiving each cutting).

Representing fragments in c-type colour print has imbued each piece with a potency; this fetishisation reinforces my intention to construct a mythology and engender an allure to what is intrinsically unexceptional.

Here are seven examples from the archive of one hundred non-collage fragments.
